Education

Holt Planetarium - Education programmes

The Planetarium hosts more than 2000 students annually. Our education programmes can be tailored to suit any level from pre-school and Kohanga Reo young learners to polytech students and adults involved in continuing education. We can handle up to 60 students in one visit.

Programmes consist of a presentation in the lecture theatre and a night sky session in the dome room using the Zeiss projector. The lecture theatre presentation can be a video, DVD or live presentation depending on your curriculum needs. Some of our more popular presentations are:
Living in Space - What is it like to orbit the Earth?
Sun, Earth and Moon - How are day and night, seasons and eclipses caused?
Solar System records - Where is the hottest place and the worst weather?
The Life and Death of Stars - How does our Sun work?
The guide for your night sky session will show you the evening sky set for the day of your visit. Learn about the nature of stars and the patterns that they make. Listen to the stories of ancient and modern cultures as they are told in the sky.

Plan to spend a minimum of one hour with us. We usually like to budget an extra thirty minutes at the end for our popular question and answer session. Students are given the chance to ask one of our host presenters any questions about astronomy and space that they can think of. This has led to some very interesting discussions!

Our schedule is flexible so we will try to accommodate you at a time that suits your needs. This can be during the day for local schools or in the evening for out of town visitors and groups like Girl Guides or Keas.

The charge for school programmes is $8 per student. There is no charge for teachers.
